- This seriescontains records relating to the publication of 'The Watchman', formerly published as 'The Westerner', a newsletter serving the Hull Jewish Community and begun by Rabbi E.S. Rabinowitz. As minister of Hull Western Synagogue Rabbi E.S. Rabinowitz issued the first number of 'The Westerner' on Friday 27 Mar 1953 to provide information and news updates to members of Hull Western Synagogue Congregation. Following the appointment of Rabbi E.S. Rabinowitz as Communal Rabbi serving Hull Western Synagogue, Hull Old Hebrew Congregation, and Hull Central Synagogue, the newsletter became intended to provide information to the whole of the Jewish Community, and from 10 Aug 1956 it was issued every Friday under the title 'The Watchman'. It went through two editions, the first covering the period 10 Aug 1956-27 Mar 1959, and the second covering the period 10 Apr 1959-present. New layouts were introduced with issues Second Edition No.1, with Second Edition No.234, and with Second Edition No.951. The production of 'The Watchman' was overseen by an Editorial Board under the auspices of the Hull Jewish Representative Council, and battled serious financial troubles to maintain publication.
