These rate books form a crucial resource from the early part of the Second World War when many records ceased to be produced, such as electoral registers and trade directories, due to enemy action and paper shortages.
They cover Hull and its outlying villages, including Hessle and Anlaby. Most of the entries give details of the rate-payer, and/or the name of the owner of the property. For some properties, however, there are no details of the rate-payer.
Most of the rate books are indexed by street at the start of the volume. For those rate books that were not indexed, an index with page references has been created within the description field of this catalogue.
Information regarding the exact location for terraces and small streets has been ascertained by using relevant trade directories.
