Copy of Petition in Chancery of John Willis of London, esq. in Scarlett and others v Willis and others

Reference No:
U DDLA/41/35
Dates:
4 May 1816
Description:
Willis was requesting that all rum and sugar from Peru plantation and mountain settlement called Thicketts be shipped to him. The petition includes information about the Scarletts' property in Jamaica, including "Mrs Scarlett's Negroes have not been removed from Peru. She receives annually since the said 26th January 1813 hire for them. She wishes her Negroes who are accustomed to Peru and have grounds to remain upon the Property though as a jobbing Gang they might earn her more. Mr Richards the Receiver is also desirous they should continue on the property and it is presumed that under the Order of the 25th January 1813 it is altogether discretionary with the Receiver to employ them or not. Mrs Scarlett has no objection to the Sugar Estate being converted into a Penn and the Negroes jobbed out on the neighbouring properties provided the Arrears due to her on account of her allowance in lieu of Dower and for her advances on account of her Children were provided for as well as her growing annuity and the Maintenance of her Daughters regularly paid out of the rent of the Negroes or out of the proceeds of Peru Estate or Green Vale Penn."
