Description:

Born in 1739, Tate Wilkinson was a succesful actor and circuit manager. He began as an actor in the London theatre, but in 1766 became the manager of several Yorkshire theatres, inlcuding those of Hull and York. In 1769 paid £500 for two Royal Patents which allowed the names to be changed to Theatre Royal, York and Theatre Royal, Hull. The York Circuit comprised of York, Hull, Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster and Ponetfract Theatre's.
