Description

Admin History:

Thomas Brownlow Thompson was listed as an architect and surveyor of 150 Parliament Street in Hull in 1889, a situation that did not change until 1928 (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1889 p.214 and Kelly's Directory of Hull 1928 p.4). His home address was initially at 120 Grafton Street, (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1901 p.437) although 1919 he had moved to 38 Dover Street in Hull (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1919 and 1925 p.461). 1929 saw the first reference to the partnership between the John Jas. Fisher and Thompson. The listing was as 'T. Brownlow Thompson & Fisher PASI' (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1929 p.635 & p.179). Fisher's home address was listed as 53 College Grove (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1929 p.351). 1933 saw the partnership based at 15 Parliament Street, (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1930 p.658) although by 1936 they had moved to Middleton Chambers on Lowgate (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1933 p.718). A year later saw them move again, this time to County Buildings on the Land of Green Ginger (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1937 p.795).

Between 1939 and 1942, the partnership with Thompson had ended because in 1942, Fisher had a new partner. This was Harold Hollingworth ('Business Journal' May/June 1992 pp.20-22). In 1954 they were based at 23 Lowgate (Kingston upon Hull Telephone Directory 1954 p.23). They were involved in the design of the following notable buildings in Hull: Royal Station Hotel refit, Salvation Army Hostel, Skeltons Bakery, Hedon Road Flying Angel Seaman Mission and the 'court shells' for the Victorian Exchange buildings on corner of Bowlalley Lane and Lowgate. By 1992 they were based at Haworth House on Clough Road, with offices in Goole and Gainsborough ('Business Journal' May/June 1992 pp.20-22).
