Description

Admin History:

The origins of the Hull Exchange start at the Exchange and Newsroom in Exchange Court founded by Mr W Bell in 1794. On 4 December 1862 there was a public meeting of subscribers. This resulted in the foundation of the Hull Exchange Company on 10 October 1863, with T W Flint as its first chairman. The foundation stone to the new Exchange building was laid on the corner of Bowlalley Lane and Lowgate on 15 February 1865. It was opened formerly on 3 April 1866 (Hull Exchange Year Book, 1938, p.6). They adopted the seal of the Merchant Adventurers and initially started to trade in the corn, seed, oil and shipping insurance trades. However with the opening of the Pacific Club in High Street, the corn & seed element was lost ('The Whirl', Journal of Rotary Club of Hull, Dec 1967, p.10). In 1885 it was listed as an exchange and as a club. The secretary was William Henry Mines, a post he was still holding in 1892 (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1885 p.212 & p.311 & Kelly's Directory of Hull 1892, p.195). In 1899 William Dyson Thacker became the secretary, and was still in post by 1912 (Cook's Hull & District Directory 1899 p.331 & Kelly's Directory of Hull 1912, p.302).

1906 saw the addition of a coal exchange (Hull Exchange Year Book, 1938, p.6) and the Hull Exchange Company had also acquired its own dining rooms. The directory for 1919 again lists it as a club, with the secretary as W B Wickman (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1919, p.311 & p.536). By 1921 the secretary was Noel A Watson (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1921, p.330) and five years later S O Watson became secretary (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1926, p.363). In 1933, it had three separate entries, as The Exchange Club, The Exchange Club Dining Rooms and The Hull Exchange Co. Ltd, although they all had the same telephone & telegraphic numbers (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1933, p.461). 1936 saw E L Coultas as the secretary (Kelly's Directory of Hull 1936, p.779). The Exchange Company met each weekday at 12 noon, with a special extra weekly market for collieries on Thursdays (Hull Exchange Year Book, 1938, p.6).

In 1952 the Hull Exchange Company was acquired by the General Accident Insurance Company Ltd, although it was still listed as the Hull Exchange Co. Ltd (Kingston upon Hull Telephone Directory 1954, p.34). They allowed the Exchange Company to continue to use the rooms as a club and dining room. Nevertheless in 1962, the Exchange was closed, as the insurance business was expanding and the exchange company had continued its decline ('The Whirl', Journal of Rotary Club of Hull, Dec 1967, p.10) The liquidator was Mr. D. C. S. Downs.
