Dates:
1910-1962

Description

Admin History:

In 1802, John Lofthouse established a druggists business at 12 Market Place, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. He was joined in partnership by James Saltmer in 1863, and the business was styled Lofthouse & Saltmer. In 1873, warehouses were acquired at Church Lane, Kingston-upon-Hull. In 1910, the business was incorporated as a limited liability company, Lofthouse & Saltmer Ltd, and expanded into the wholesale distribution of drugs and galenicals, in particular, halibut liver oil. In 1941, the company's premises at Church Lane were destroyed during enemy action, causing a move to new buildings within the city. In 1962, the company was acquired by Evans Medical Ltd of Speke, Liverpool, Merseyside, and in 1965, relocated again to Stoneferry Road, Kingston-upon-Hull. In 1966 the wholesale distribution interests of Glaxo Group Ltd and British Drug Houses Group Ltd, London merged to form a limited liability company, Vestric Ltd. This combined interest created a company with 36 trading branches, amongst which were many long-established companies including Woolley Sons & Co Ltd, Duncan Flockhart Ltd and Bradley & Bliss Ltd. Lofthouse and Saltmer Ltd became a branch of Vestric Ltd at this point, ceasing to operate under its established name. In 1984, the Kingston-upon-Hull branch of Vestric Ltd was closed, and amalgamated with Vestric Ltd, Leeds.
