For many years, until the opening of the Aire and Calder Navigation, the 2 rivers were navigable as far as Knottingley. This made the town the inland port of the West Riding and it was the home of many shipbuilders, vessel owners and even master mariners. Until ship registration began in Goole in 1828, ships had to register in their nearest port, which was Hull
