Description:
This seriescontains the records of Hull Hebrew Congregation, the current active Jewish Orthodox congregation based at Pryme Street Synagogue. The congregation was officially formed on 31 May 1992 when members of the Hull Western Synagogue at Linnaeus Street and Hull Old Hebrew Congregation at Osborne Street agreed a constitution for the new united congregation. This was the result of long decades of negotiations regarding the possibility of a united synagogue, and was driven by a decreasing Jewish population in Hull and the need for more suitable accommodation for worship. In 1991 an 'Ad Hoc Planning and Collaboration Committee' was established to co-ordinate the work necessary to achieve the establishment of the new congregation. The committee operated under the leadership of Richard Bermitz, Philip Daniels, and Max Gold, and aided by Cyril Rosenston, Barry Donn, Anthony Rowland, Edward Pearlman, and Conrad Segalman. Sub-committees for Finance under the leadership of Anthony Rowland and Edward Pearlman, and for drafting a new Constitution under the leadership of Conrad Segalman and Max Gold were also formed. The committee undertook the work of commissioning and preparing proposals and options relating to housing the new congregation, to establishing its charity status, and to drafting a constitution to govern the management of the congregation once established. The work of the committee came to fruition on 2 April 1995 when the newly built Pryme Street Synagogue, Anlaby, was consecrated by the Chief Rabbi. An opening and consecration ceremony was held and Rabbi Shalom Osdoba was inducted as the community's first Rabbi. He remained in post until June 2011 when the position of full time Rabbi was abolished due to the declining financial situation of the Congregation and falling membership numbers.
