Description

Admin History:
The origins of Hull's Museums and Galleries lie in the work of the Hull Literary and Philosophical Society and their museum, the Royal Institution on Albion Street. The museum was passed to the Hull Municipal Corporation in 1900 who added an art gallery in the rooms above. Under the enthusiastic drive and direction of curator, Thomas Sheppard, Hull's museums grew throughout the early 20th century and remain an important part of Hull's cultural heritage. The Ferens Art Gallery opened in 1927 after a gift from T.R. Ferens. For the historical and biographical background for the individuals, firms and organisations within the collection, see each specific entry.
