Fishing Vessel Crew Agreements Yearly Returns

Dates:
1884-1914

Description

Admin History:

Agreements and Crew Lists, (ACLs), were introduced in 1835. The agreement was used by the ship's Master (Captain), to record the conditions of employment of the crew for the voyage and period of service. The agreement was agreed by each seaman before the ship sailed. The resultant crew lists were used by the registry clerks to create the entries in the various seamen's registers.

Hull City Archives holds fishing vessel crew agreements from 1884-1914. These were compiled under the 1883 Sea Fisheries Act. For ships registered in the United Kingdom, owners were required by law to deposit documents giving details of each of their vessels and its crew to the Registrar of Shipping and Seamen at six monthly intervals. Fishing vessels were required to complete an agreement for each voyage.

Description:

Fishing Vessel crew agreements record the names of the vessels, owners and skippers. They also give information about the crew onboard, such as their names and details such as age, where born and who received the wages (usually wife, mother or self).

The names of the vessels, owners and skippers and some of the crew have been entered onto the database and can be searched accordingly.
