Description

Admin History:

The Young Peoples' Christian and Literary Institute was founded in 1860 by delegates and representatives of the religious bodies in Hull, to promote the intellectual, moral and religious improvement of its members. It was of a non-political and non-sectarian character. It began in a small house rented at 36 George Street in April 1860. By the end of the first year 700 members had enrolled.

The next 25 years showed a consistent progress in development with membership increasing to an average annual figure of 2000. The increase of membership called for larger accommodation and in 1864 No. 3 Charlotte Street was acquired. In 1891 further accommodation was acquired with the adjoining house at No. 1 Charlotte Street being purchased.

Many notable and prominent citizens of Hull have been President of the Institute, including Z. C. Pearson 1860-1862; Rt. Hon. T. R. Ferens 1889-1893; Ald. W. A. Gelder 1897-1899; Joseph Rank 1901-1903, to name but a few.
