In August 1866 the Town Council appointed a committee to work with other local bodies in order to provide suitable accommodation in the Town Hall and devise an appropriate reception for the visit in 1867 of the Royal Archaeological Institute (RAI). The committee was re-elected in November 1866 but had been dissolved by the time the RAI held their meeting in the July of 1867.
