Description

Admin History:
The Burial Committee of the Borough of Hull was established in 1875. It would manage, direct, contract for and superintend all work for the borough's cemeteries and the closed burial grounds in the town. It could appoint staff such as registrars, gardeners and other servants as required and was able to prepare rules and bye-laws for the regulation of the borough's cemeteries. In addition, it would execute and perform all powers and duties of the council under statute on behalf of the council. In terms of finance, the committee could examine and certify all accounts for the Finance Committee and to authorise them to pay wages, allowances and expenses incurred. It would also have to submit proper accounts. Between 1876-1879 this was amended to the Property and Finance Committees, although the Property Committee element was dropped from 1879-1880. From 1889-1890 the committee joined with the Parks and Recreation Grounds Committee to form the Parks and Burials Committee. This committee also oversaw the building of first municipal crematorium in England.
