Records of the Hull City Council Coal (Emergency) Committee

Dates:
1920-1921

Description

Admin History:
In 1920, as part of their ongoing industrial action, British miners called for strike support from railway and transport workers. With the strike due to start on 15th April, Hull City Council, like many other councils, began to plan ahead. As a result, the Coal (Emergency) Committee met on 4th April 1920. It took stock of existing coal reserves in the city, and dealt with all requests for coal from businesses and allocated amounts accordingly. However, when the railwaymen and transport workers withdrew their support for the miners, the emergency was eventually called off and the committee was wound up in August 1921.
