Records of the Hull Corporation Unemployment Investigation Committee

Dates:
1894-1896

Description

Admin History:
The 1890s was period of great economic difficulty across the UK as a whole, and Hull was no different. With the House of Commons having already established its own special committee to investigate the unemployment issue nationally, April 1895 saw the then Hull Town Council do the same. It was to look at ways in which the municipal authority could provide work for the unemployed. Having organised a conference with both the Hull and Sculcoates Poor Law Guardians in December 1895, the committee reported back in January 1896 and did not convene again until it was reappointed in November 1896. This appears to have been the last time the Unemployment Investigation Committee met.
