The collection mainly consists of numerous letters, the majority of which are written by Michael Murphy to his parents detailing his time spent on the ships the Thistlebank and the Castlebank, dated July 1891-September 1896, transcripts of the letters are included on CD-ROM. Also included are a notification from Hull Trinity House of the examination for the admission of boys to the school, certificates from Hull Trinity House recommending Michael Murphy for service at sea, dated 26 August 1891, as well as memorandum providing details of arrival times and locations of the two ships, photographs, receipts, and a small number of papers relating to Thomas Murphy.
