Description:
This series contains records relating to the Hull branch of the Association of Jewish Ex-Service Men and Women (AJEX). AJEX is a national association of regional branches formed for the benefit of Jewish ex-service men and women, to commemorate fallen comrades, to provide aid for needy ex-servicemen and women, and to educate future generations against the horrors of WWII. The Hull branch of AJEX was originally formed as the 'Duveen Section' of the Royal British Legion in 1929, after a group of ex-soldiers from Hull attended a national Kaddish at Whitehall marking the erection of the Cenotaph to the memory of fallen Jewish servicemen. The 90th anniversary of the Kaddish was commemorated in Hull with a remembrance service arranged by Hull AJEX Branch Chairman Perris Coupland. The Hull branch of AJEX has been responsible for arranging annual Remembrance Day services on which occasions parades of members were held and attended by various civic dignitaries including the many Jewish Lord Mayors and Sheriffs of Hull. Note that the association's national headquarters is situated in London and is responsible for the founding of the Jewish Military Museum in London which hosts 'The Record of Honor', a database of Jewish ex-servicemen and women who served in the British Armed Forces during the period 1939-1960.
