Description:
This seriescontains records relating to the Hull branch of the Order of B'nai B'rith. B'nai B'rith is a worldwide Jewish brotherhood which was founded in New York in 1843 and which is guided by principles of benevolence, harmony, and brotherly love. The purpose of the order is to unite all Jews, promoting their interests, developing the moral character of the Jewish people, developing principles of philanthropy, honour and patriotism, supporting science and art, alleviating poor and needy, aiding victims of persecution, and providing for the aged, widows, and orphans. In Hull a men's lodge was established in the 1930s, followed later by a women's lodge and a youth organisation. In the late 20th century the men's and women's lodges began to effect closer co-operation which eventually led to their amalgamation as the Hull B'nai B'rith Joint Lodge.
