- This seriescontains records relating to the Board of Shechita, a management Board established to oversee the provision of kosher foodstuffs to the Hull Jewish population. According to Jewish Law only meat from certain animals can be consumed, and these animals must be killed and prepared in accordance with kashrut (Jewish dietary laws). This involves the slaughter of animals in accordance with the process of shechita by a trained and certified individual known as the shochet. In addition, only food prepared by Jewish persons using kosher utensils is permitted to be consumed under the limitations of kashrut. As part of its work the Board was responsible for appointing a shochet for the city, overseeing the import of kosher livestock and food stuffs such as bread, milk and cheese, licensing and regulating kosher butchers and food vendors in the city, and approving public venues for kosher functions.
