- This seriescontains records relating to Hull Brotherly Help Lodge No.19 of the Grand Order of Israel Friendly Society. A Jewish self-help society appears to have been established in Hull the late 1880s. This early society included amongst its presidents E. Feitleberg, J. Bush, H. Moscow, H. Solomon, L. Mendlesohn, H. Goldstone, H. Vigodsky, H.W. Simmons, and F. Zerny. On 30 Jul 1903, the Hull Hebrew Friendly Society was registered with the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies, and became an affiliate Lodge of the Grand Order of Israel, which Order had a Grand Lodge in London. Applicants wishing to join the Friendly Society had to be proposed by two existing members, known as 'Brothers', and a 1 shilling 'Proposition Fee' was required. Applicants then received an examination by a medical officer to determine fitness and eligibility for membership. Note: The 'Jewish Chronicle' of 5 Jan 1900 records the occasion of an AGM of the Hull Hebrew Self Help Friendly Society, and shows Brother F. Zerny to be President of the Friendly Society at that time.
