- Description:
This seriescontains records of Hull Hebrew Board of Guardians, registered charity number 227049. The Board was a governing body established in 1880 to co-ordinate and oversee charity efforts on behalf of the Jewish poor, sick and elderly in Hull. It worked in much the same way as the English Boards of Guardians established by local authorities to oversee poor relief in the localities. The Hull Hebrew Board of Guardians was officially registered by the Board of Deputies' Charities Registration Committee at a meeting on 2 Feb 1953. By the late 20th century much of the Board's work focused on the provision of care to the elderly through the maintainence of a care home and many of its original functions were no longer relevant. A major reorganisation took place in 1996-1997 under which the Board retained its charity status and registered charity number and continued its existence as Hull Jewish Community Care.
From this point the Board's work focused on the maintenance and management of a residence providing care for the Jewish elderly. This residence was established by the Board in 1954 and has been known variously as the Hull Jewish Flatlets, the Jewish Aged Home, and Menorah House. The home was managed by the The Flatlets/Aged Homes Management Committee, under the auspices of the Board of Guardians. The running costs of the home were funded by members contributions and by appeals to various charitable trusts. Major planning for re-building and modernisation work was initiated in 1995 and appeals to various charitable organisations for donations to fund the work were made in 1995 and then again in 1997. At this time a Building and Maintenance Committee was established with Conrad Segelman as Chairman, and with other committee members including V. Appleson, A. Collins, E. Pearlman, S. Pearlman, H. Rose, J. Rose, L. Simmons, G. Silver, S. Burnley, and Mrs A. Segelman. Due to dwindling numbers and financial troubles the home closed in 2012 and the work of the Board in this respect was wound up.
