Description:
This seriescontains records of Hull Hebrew Congregation, later Hull Old Hebrew Congregation, formed in 1826 with the building of a Synagogue in Robinson Row to house the re-united congregation of two formerly rival synagogues. The first foundation stones of Robinson Row were laid by Solomon Meyer (of the former Posterngate Synagogue) and by Israel Jacobs (of the former Parade Row Synagogue) on 27 February 1826. The Robinson Row Synagogue opened 18 June 1827, and was rebuilt and re-consecrated on 26 September 1852. In 1902 the Congregation removed to premises in Osborne Street and the new Synagogue was officially opened on 10 September 1903. The Osborne Street Synagogue was enlarged in 1932, before being severely damaged during a German air raid in 1941. Repairs were undertaken at length and the synagogue reopened in 1955. The Congregation continued to worship at Osborne Street in accordance with the Ashkenazi Orthodox ritual until 1993. At this time the premises were sold following the amalgamation in March 1992 of the Hull Western Synagogue and the Hull Old Hebrew Congregation to form the currently active Hull Hebrew Congregation.
