Description:
This seriescontains the records of Hull Central Hebrew Congregation, more often referred to as Hull Central Synagogue. The congregation was initially established in 1886 at Waltham Street aka School Street to accommodate the expanding Jewish population resulting from Russian immigration. In 1914 the congregation moved from its initial location in Waltham Street to new premises in Cogan Street where it remained until the Cogan Street Synagogue building was destroyed during an air raid in 1940. A large house in West Parade was used for worship 1940-1951, and from 1951 the congregation worshipped at synagogue premises in Park Street. After a prolonged period of decreasing membership Hull Central Synagogue closed in 1976. At this time most members of the former Central congregation joined Hull Western Synagogue, though a number became members of Hull Old Hebrew Congregation.
