Significant interest in Reform Judaism existed in Hull from the early 1960s when a number of individuals travelled to the Leeds Reform Synagogue for services. In 1966 five families, the Bermitzes, Levys, Rosenbergs, Barnetts and Gordons, met to form a committee to establish a Reform Synagogue in Hull. In 1968 Anlaby House was used to hold the first Reform Congregation Service in Hull, and in 1971 the Hull Reform Congregation became a constituted Synagogue. In 1981 the Synagogue was granted full membership of the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain when membership numbers passed 40. As membership slowly increased in the 1980s Anlaby Methodist Church Hall, followed by Cottingham Civic Hall were used to hold services. In 1991, Henry Goldstone purchased a site and a Synagogue was built at Great Gutter Lane, Willerby. The first formal service was held on 18 February 1992 led by Ian Sugarman, and the consecration ceremony took place on Sunday 26 April 1992 led by Rabbi Rodney Mariner, Chairman of the RSGB Assembly of Rabbis, Rabbi Walter Rothschild and Rabbi Danny Rich.
