Description:
File contains papers relating to the Ella Street Cemetery. The cemetery was purchased 16 Feb 1888 and consecrated May 1889 for Central Synagogue. In May 1947 the Western Synagogue bought a large area of land at the site and in 1950 a Tarah House was built, a wooden prayer house was demolished in 2009. The site is now owned in its entirety by the Hull Hebrew Congregation of Pryme Street Synagogue. Papers include plans, copy conveyances dated 16 Feb 1888 and 31 Dec 1925, correspondence mainly received by Barrie Schneider in relation to the management of the cemetery, two copies of a transcript of monumental inscriptions at the cemetery produced by Jack D.J. Allerston in 1986 one of which has been added to by Jack Lennard, and photographs of headstones and buildings at the cemetery including some showing desecration of stones and walls with anti-semitic graffiti and plans, stone copies and notes relating to the purchase of land for memorials and photocopies of deeds relating to the site.
