- The file consists of correspondence between the Engineer to the Humber Conservancy Board, Arthur Ernest Butterfield, the Assistant Superintendent for the Upper Humber, Charles Augustus Mountifield, Brough, and various contractors and equipment suppliers. The subject matter is the operation and maintenance of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Whitton lightships. This includes collisions with passing river traffic, expenses incurred by the Conservancy as a result of these collisions, and issues concerning the lightship crews (e.g. accidents, promotions, illness etc.). Specifications for overhauling and maintenance work required by the lightships, and the hire of temporary replacement lightships, can also be found in the file.
