The file consists of correspondence between the Engineer to the Humber Conservancy Board (Arthur Ernest Butterfield), the Secretary to the Board (Alfred William Franklin), Messrs Hardy and Middleton, a Senior Surveyor to the Board of Trade (Mr Pease), the Commandant for the Prisoner of War Camp at Catterick, and various suppliers of materials. The subject matter is maintenance work undertaken on Read’s Island in the Humber (this includes the use of prisoners of war to provide labour). This includes: repairing breaches in the river banks, revetment work, and Fencing Repairs. Time sheets for men employed to undertaken work on the Island can be found within the file.
