The file consists of correspondence between the Engineer to the Humber Conservancy Board (Arthur Ernest Butterfield), and the Office of the Rear Admiral Commanding (East Coast) and the Admiralty Port Officer, both based at Immingham. It also includes correspondence with the Board's light keepers, and the Admiralty Port Officer (Humber). The subject matter is confidential instructions given to the pilots and the masters of ships. These instruction cover the operation of lighthouses on the Humber, the Humber Boom Defence Operation (including the passage of vessels through the Gateways in the Boom), stoppages of river traffic, and the positioning of moorings in the Humber.
