The file consists of correspondence between the Engineer to the Humber Conservancy Board (Arthur Ernest Butterfield), the Admiralty Hydrographic Department (based in London), representatives of the Aire and Calder Navigation, representatives of the Great Central Railway (based at the Grimsby Docks), and the Tidal Institute (based at Liverpool). The subject matter is tidal observations of the Humber. In particular, discussion surrounding variations in some readings; variations could possibly be caused by the type of gauges used, the strength of the tide, the presence of sandbanks etc.. The file includes lists detailing the times and heights of high water at various locations along the Humber.
