Description:

A package (divided into two folders) containing papers surrendered to the Aire and Calder Navigation on 25 July 1905 by Carter's Knottingley Brewery Company Limited and their Mortgagee. The papers are connected with Leasehold premises (No. 43): the Steam Packet Inn, situate in Foundry Lane in the town of Goole, Yorkshire. The package includes the following:

Deeds (1835–1905):

1. Counterpart of Lease for 99 years (3 August 1835): the Trustees of the Aire and Calder Navigation to Messrs William Whitfield and Charles Darley. It includes an inset plan showing the land and property in question. The Deed has been signed and sealed by the aforementioned Leasees.

2. Lease of Inn (27 January 1838): Thomas Barley to Thomas Mark Carter. The Deed has been signed and sealed by the aforementioned parties.

3. Assignment of Leasehold (14 February 1840): Thomas Mark Carter to William Edward Carter. The Deed has been signed and sealed by the aforementioned parties, John Carter of Knottingley, and John Carter of Howden.

4. Assignment of Leasehold (30 May 1842): Messrs William Whitfield and Charles Darley to Messrs John Carter of Knottingley, John Carter of Howden, and William Carter. The Deed has been signed and sealed by Messrs Whitfield and Darley, and Joseph Priestley on behalf of the Navigation.

5. Lease for 99 years (1 January 1885): the Trustees of the Aire and Calder Navigation to George William Carter. It includes a plan showing the land and property in question. The Deed has been signed and sealed by the following representatives of the Navigation: Andrew Montagu, William Aldam, Walter Thomas William Spencer Stanhope, and Francis Darwin.

6. Counterpart of Lease for 99 years (1 January 1885): the Trustees of the Aire and Calder Navigation to George William Carter. It includes a plan showing the land and property in question. The Deed has been signed and sealed by the aforementioned Leasee.

7. Assignment of Leasehold (19 November 1892): George William Carter and John Charles Harvey (with the consent of the Trustees of the Aire and Calder Navigation) to Carter's Knottingley Brewery Company Limited. The Deed has been signed and sealed by the aforementioned parties, and Marmaduke Storr Hodson on behalf of the Navigation.

8. Copy of Conveyance of Leasehold (26 July 1892): George William Carter and John Charles Harvey to Carter's Knottingley Brewery Company Limited.

9. Copy of Charge upon divers Freehold and Leasehold (27 July 1892) for securing accounts of the Brewing Company: Carter's Knottingley Brewery Company Limited the Sheffield Union Banking Company Limited.

10. Copy of Assignment of Leasehold (19 November 1892): George William Carter (with the consent of the Trustees of the Aire and Calder Navigation) and John Charles Harvey to Carter's Knottingley Brewery Company Limited.

11. Surrender of Leasehold (25 July 1905): Carter's Knottingley Brewery Company Limited and their Mortgagees to the Trustees of the Aire and Calder Navigation. The Deed has been signed and sealed by Thomas Harrison, James William Bentley, and Colin Mackenzie Smith. It also bears the seal of the aforementioned Brewing Company, the Sheffield Union Banking Company Limited, and the London City and Midland Bank Limited.
