Memoranda by Skipper.

On Thursday August 7th 1884, at sea John Hatfield was on deck and he was not doing his duty, me the skipper went on deck and saw him asleep. On the following Tuesday morning I went on deck again and saw him asleep at the time 2.25 am and no one was looking after the ship.

And on Tuesday morning 19th of August at 2.30 am our deck hand came down to call me up and I went on deck and saw him asleep again.

August 29th 1884 , smack Laurina No. 1094 . Whilst we were sailing the wind being about south west , Sparkling Sea was sailing with own sail on the port side and the Laurina was sailing with her sail on the starboard side of his ship. and he starboard his helm and run into us and carried away his bowspit and split our sail.
