While heaving a double reef down, he was holding back a rope on the capstan, when by some carelessness on his part, his left hand was caught in the cog wheels and severley crushed. Breaking the bones across the palm. The weather being very bad we did not see the Mission ship, I bandaged his hand after bathing it in cold water & put him onboard the Cutter Europe of Hull bound for London. Died in the London Hospital December 14th 1895 from Tetanus.
