24th March 8am. J Hillam, 3rd Hand. Whilst engaged in greasing the cogs of the winch the vessel gave a sudden lurch which caused him to fall against or come in contact with the stop valve which started the winch, his left hand was in consequence severley crushed in the cogs resulting in the loss of three fingers and his thumb.
