Official Log.

On Wednesday November 28th our deck hand H Wood showed signs of mental derangement, repeatedly expressing his belief that the 2nd eng. had been paid to murder him. At 3pm on the following Sunday 2nd, he refused duty any more. 20 minutes later I was on the bridge - looking forward when Wood called out to me from the vessels side "Goodbye skipper, I'm off. Go on full speed." and there upon deliberately jumped overboard. I succeeded with assistance of my crew about half an hour later in rescuing him , but little the worse for the immersion, he having kept himself afloat by means of a grating which he took good care to throw into the water before himself jumping overboard. As a safeguard & also at his own request I then secured him in the forecastle for the remainder of the voyage, excepting about 12 hours & regularly sent food to him.
