Memoranda by Skipper.
Benjamin Phelan 3rd Hand of smack Competitor took ill at sea & was sent home on the 20th day of June 1885 in the SS Colonel Smith. April 1. Sirs to the board of trade. I log the skipper for assaulting all of the crew especially the cook & using indecent language and coming on board twice drunk. Starvation and keeping us on doiled fish when we had plenty of beef on board. He went off board and stopped off board till dark as I brought the ship home without him.

February 24th fishing on the Dogger Bank Wallace Wilkinson. Struck by the Tiller whilst reefing. J Callaran ( Skipper ) J Roberts ( 3rd Hand ) injured internally.
