While steaming slow with a light westerly breeze , we gave a heavy lurch to starboard taking overboard F Rotherham spare hand. The third hand called out stop there is a man overboard. I went full speed astern to see where he was, about 3 or 4 hundred feet on the starboard quarter. The ships quarter went to Port I went full speed ahead, the crew see him sink about 50 feet from us we shot the gear but could not recover the body. We trawled one of his boots up. The crew was on the forecastle head when the man sank, we tried our utmost to save him, lost him by a few seconds.
