Record of Death or Injury.
Saturday October 30th F B Collins ( see also Collings ) spare hand. Venereal Disease.
Record of Illtreatment or Punishment.
11/7/09 R Gibson, cook illtreated by T Hingley 3rd hand. Gibson challenged Hingley to a fight whereupon the latter struck him in the face, injuring his jaw & blackening his left eye. Thy were both under the influence of drink they had obtained from a Norwegian fishing vessel close to us in harbour whilst I was ashore.
Record of Casualty.
28/7/09 6.50pm Norwegian Coast. Damage to keel, 20 bottom plates and stern port bent. Stranded owing to Southerly tide setting us inshore during a fog. We got off 2 & a half hours later by heaving on our anchor. 30/10/09. No damage to our vessel. Whilst leaving Dyre Fiord we stranded but got off 12 hours later without assistance. Thick fog at the time.
Official Log.
The owners having settled up with L Hingley, 3rd hand, for his services, the fines to which he was liable under Regulations 3 & 5 for maintaining discipline have not been enforced nor do I wish to inflict that to which Gibson is also liable under Regulation 5 as I consider him to have been sufficiently punished by having to pay the medical and other expenses incidental to his injuries which necessitated his being sent ashore for 9 days treatment.
On October 30th 1909 I discharged F B Collins at Dyre Foird ( Iceland ) owing to illness, leaving him there for treatment, the doctor informing me he was suffering from venereal disease.
