Official Log. On November 5 1911 about 6.15pm I heard a whistle blowing and upon approaching found the Bassein in distress. The skipper asked me to stand by him as the ship was filling with water having shipped a heavy sea & a strong gale was blowing. November 6 1911 they showed signals of distress and asked to be taken off board, so I sent our boat for them at about 2.30am. After this we still laid by the ship which now had a big list to starboard ( & the weather had not moderated at all) until the following morning at about 4.30 when the Bassein sank.
