Memoranda by Skipper. July 15th the smack Vine collided with the smack Norfolk Hero striking her on the port side fore side the mizen rigging and causing such damage as to sink the Norfolk Hero in 45 minutes .
Record of Death or Injury. Thomas Scott, cook. While the smack Vine was laying too with the red cross fleet & blowing a gale. December 6th 1886 Spurn bearing W by S 220 miles at 12 O'clock in the day. The Vine shipped a heavy sea and washed the cook overboard & was drowned. While he was engaged washing some potatoes on deck for dinner the life belt & rope was thrown to him but he failed to get hold of them. We could not get the boat out as it was full of water at the time. Before we could get to him he sank.
