November 12 1887. I hereby certify that James H Cloves / Clowes cook onboard smack Liberal deserted her whilst at sea 12th November 1887 at 10pm. Went onboard the cutter Vigilant and they would not have him onboard knowing he been a deserter he returned onboard again threatening me that if I did not take her home he would damage her. He also threatened to stab me and all of my crew. Therefore I sent him in by cutter to London, for the safety of ship and all hands.
