Record of Death or Injury
F J Collins. August 23rd 1887 North sea. Slight cut across throat. Attempted suicide. Insanity.
Memoranda by Skipper.
J Cullen of smack Albatross do report that F J Collins age 22 of & from Hull did attempt to destroy his life by cutting his throat. I had noticed strange behaviour in him for 2 days before the occurence , but nothingto justify me in keeping watch over him. He has sailed with me for 10 months, except one trip & I have always found him a good cook, steady, attentive & thoroughly trustworthy & can in no way account for his strange behaviour except as stated , a fit of insanity. The wound which F J Collins inflicted upon himself was only very slight & did not necessitate medical treatment. The skipper fearing Collins would make a further attempt to injure himself brought the vessel home without delay reaching port on the 26th of August when Collins immeadiatelyabsented himself from the vessel & did not again return to her.
