Record of Death or Injury.
2nd June Thomas Petherbridge fell overboard.
Memoranda by Skipper.
On the 2nd June Thomas Petherbridge skipper of the smack James & Sarah of Hull 68659 came onboard this vessel with me about 6 or 6.30 pm we had been on board the Yorkshire Lass of Hull to dinner, whilst there Petherbridge got some drink from the cooper & became the worse for the liquor, consequently after leaving the Yorkshire Lass he refused to go onboard his own vessel, and therefore I had no alternative but to bring him onboard my vessel for the night . Getting on board we shot our gear & after that Thomas Petherbridge, my 2nd hand G Petherbridge, and myself sat talking until about quarter past twelve. Thomas Petherbridge by that time appeared to have quite recovered from the effects of the drink & got up & proceeded to the other side of the ship for a private purpose, he thoughtlessly leant against the stay sail sheet & whilst in this position it came up in the wind, the sheet consequently slackened and he went overboard head first we at once ran to his assistance but could see nothing of him, he must have gone under the vessels bottom .
