Memoranda by Skipper.
On or about August 31st 1889 I Joseph Atkinson captain was taken ill suddenly & was compelled to go on the mission ship Queen Victoria. Where I was ordered to bed where I stayed for a fortnight. I then, having partially recovered returned to my ship & sailed for Hull where I arrived September 18 1889. During the time I was ill on board the mission ship , my second hand Samuel Osborne took charge of the ship. I thought he would be justified in doing this , although he only holds a 2nd hands certificate, as my absence from the vessel would not , I thought be be of long duration & I intended on my return to the ship to remain at sea fishing.
