Description:
Subseries contains printed card programmes relating to annual 'Yuletide Revels' held by the Hull Literary Club. These events were held annually being the last event to be held in December, although on at least two occasions in 1919/20 and 1920/21 the revels were held as the first event in January. The revels involved carol singing including the 'Boar's Head Carol', toasts, and a dinner featuring a boar's head, followed after an interval by an evening of musical and dramatic entertainments presented by members of the club. During WWI these celebrations appear to have been suspended as no revels were held in the 1916/17, 1917/18 and 1918/19 sessions. During WWII it seems that revels were once again suspended as is shown by the 1943/44 session. The heyday of the revels appears to have been 1950s-1970s when Kenneth Hibbert was Master of the Revels and directed the entertainment with Laurence Firth and Ray Monelle. Programmes for dinners held on the following dates are present: 23 Dec 1892; 28 Dec 1893; 20 Dec 1894; 23 Dec 1895; 23 Dec 1896; 23 Dec 1897; 23 Dec 1898; 22 Dec 1899; 22 Dec 1900; 23 Dec 1901; 23 Dec 1902; 23 Dec 1903; 23 Dec 1904; 22 Dec 1905; 21 Dec 1906; 20 Dec 1907; 21 Dec 1908; 23 Dec 1909; 22 Dec 1910; 21 Dec 1911; 23 Dec 1912; 22 Dec 1913; 19 Dec 1921; 20 Dec 1929; 18 Dec 1930; 21 Dec 1931; 9 Jan 1936; 16 Jan 1937; 17 Dec 1938; 17 Dec 1945; 19 Dec 1949; 17 Dec 1951; 17 Dec 1956; 18 Dec 1957; 22 Dec 1958; 21 Dec 1959; 19 Dec 1960; 19 Dec 1961; 17 Dec 1962; 23 Dec 1963; 21 Dec 1964; 19 Dec 1966; 18 Dec 1967; 23 Dec 1968; 21 Dec 1970; 20 Dec 1971; 18 Dec 1978; 1980; 1981; 1984; 1985; 1986; 1987; 1988; 1989; 1991.
