- Description:
- Captain W.H. Smedley was Grimsby Port Missioner for 37 years and died in 1935. From old newspaper reports it appears that, before his death, Captain Smedley collected £1,500 during his role as Grimsby Port Missioner and purchased some land in Waltham (about 4 miles from Grimsby which formed part of the Waltham Old Hall Building estate). Six cottages were built on the land immediately after his death and named 'The Captain Smedley Memorial Homes.' They were built with the purpose of receiving and relieving poor and aged workers connected with the fishing industry of Grimsby. This file includes proposals for the Society to build some further cottages on the land. There is also correspondence enclosed which deals with the appointment of Trustees, their responsibilities and the wishes of Captain Smedley's daughters.
