This file includes papers relating to Miss Rowe in a personal capacity as well as in her capacity as resident warden (1950-1974) and Secretary to the Society (1971-1974). Born in 1909, Miss Rowe joined the staff of the Homes in 1943 as a Senior Clerk. She went on to become Secretary of the Newland Old Scholars Association and as a convener of the Retired Staff Association. She was also involved as a volunteer during the War as a Fire Guard Warden, she was on the Committee of Hull International House and the Hull Improvement Society and undertook voluntary probation visiting. She also spoke regularly at luncheon clubs etc and correspondence relating to that side of her work is contained in this file. She travelled widely, visiting China and South East Asia with her sister, Audrey. Audrey lived with Phyllis at Newland for a time. After her retirement from the Society in 1974 Miss Rowe maintained her interest in all connected with the Society, young and old, to the end of her life. She was awarded the MBE. in 1980 in recognition of her work at the Society and for her volunteer work in general. She died on 9th March 1988 after suffering a sudden heart attack
