- Henry Reed was a philanthropist, merchant, shipping magnate and pioneer of Tasmania. He was an active Methodist and for a short time he was a member of the Tasmanian Upper House. Born in Doncaster on 26 Oct 1806. He was apprenticed to a merchant in Hull at 13 years of age in 1819. In 1826 he sailed for the first time to Australia, returning to the UK in 1847 before going back to Australia in 1873. He died in Launceston on 10 Oct 1880.
