Mr Sheppard was the first person from Hull to be awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in 1855 during the Crimea War. These papers detail the events leading up to his award, information on this and other medals he was awarded during his career and some family details. Includes a copy portrait of Mr Sheppard in later life and a copy photograph of his medals on display at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
