- Description:
Repairs to C (b) Houses. C (b) properties were classed as 'seriously damaged and to be evacuated'
These repairs were initiated by the Ministry of Health who instructed Local Authorities to proceed with these repairs to houses damaged by enemy action with a view to easing the demand for housing accomodation. These houses cost an average of £200 to repair. The folder includes correspondence with the City Architect who compiled lists of the properties to be repaired and prioritised the work to be done. Some houses were deemed ineligible for repair as they would cost more than £200 and were already earmarked for slum clearance under the City's Town Planning Schemes. There is a transcript of a meeting held in the Guildhall on 1 Apr 1943 between officials from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Works, the City Architect, Deputy Town Clerk and various contractors to discuss the insurance of the works and the way forward. Memos from the City Architect to the Town Clerk are also included which list, by address the C (b) houses that have been restored and are fit for use from 13 Apr 1944-3 Jun 1946.
